Metaphor

Metaphors are the comparison of two things that are completely different but can be used to express a feeling or activity only using the word is. For example "he is such a pig." Another type of metaphor is a simile. A simile is a comparison of two nouns where we use the words like or as for instance "he is tough like a bull." Other metaphors are personification and anthropomorphism. A anthropomorphism is a type of metaphor where an animal is given human features like talking example of this are characters like Mickey Mouse,Donald Duck and Goofy. Personification is a type of metaphor where we object human characteristics like "the sun was smiling on my face." Hyperbole is an exaggeration of something " she's as big as a whale." An analogy is a comparison of a pair of things that are in the same family group but are complete opposites for example "up is to down as left is to right."

Metaphors most commonly appear in poetry, take for instance Robert Herrick's poem "A Meditation for his Mistress" he uses a wide range of different types of metaphors. An example "You are a tulip seen to-day"(Paragraph 1 line 1). He is comparing someone's physical appearance to that of a tulip. You can find a simile in paragraph 4 line 1 "You are like balm enclosed well." In this line Herrick is comparing his mistress to lemon scented balm flowers used back in the back day to provide a refreshed smell, he's explaining to his mistress how she makes everything beautiful to him.

Emily Dickinson is another poet who used various forms of metaphors in her poetry for example her poem "A Book" the line "There is no frigate like a book". In this line she is describing how books broaden a mind to explore new places not even a boat can even take you. In her poem "Beauty and Truth" she has a line that says "I died for beauty, but was scarce" Dickinson is referring to being a a victim of beauty and going to far measurements to improves ones self image to the point where she no longer was her your own person.

e e cummings poem l(a is written in form where the reader has to figure out what he is trying to say because the text is going down the page vertically so I had to put the letters together. After I did I had 1(aleaffalls)onliness. If we unscramble this we'll have "lonliness (a leaf falls) this represents humans and how were all alone in the world and although we may have people around that love and care for us were still alone. Like the leaf came from a tree with tons of others leafs and at one point or another it has to fall just like humans at one point we have to die.

Metaphors are a great way to express yourself. We can be overly dramatic when comparing our feelings and at the same time be somewhat philosophical too. Through out the years metaphors have been used to describe those emotions we sometimes can find logical or similar words to describe helping us express ourselves with more depth.
